Titanium dioxide plant coming up in Orissa

The state of Orissa will soon have a new titanium dioxide plant. The Kolkata-based Saraf Agency is negotiating with Indian Rare Earths Ltd (IREL) for setting up of a 50,000 ton titanium dioxide plant at Chatrapur in Orissa, in association with Technocim Holding and Pigment Corporation (THPC), a public sector company of Russia. Saraf Agency has entered into a MoU with St Petersburg based THPC, which has promised to buy back the entire titanium dioxide produced by the venture for further value addition in Russia. The Kolkata firm has initiated negotiation with IREL, a PSU under department of Atomic Energy, after the term of its earlier MoU with Industrial Development Corporation of Orissa (Idcol), a state-owned company, on a similar venture expired few months back. Saraf Agency had signed a MoU with Idcol in 1998 for exploration of beach sand reserves and setting up of a titanium dioxide plant on the Ganjam coast. Idcol holds lease of beach sand area of 19.77 sqkm, to the north of IREL project in Chttrapur.
