No work, no pay: no work for more pay

Pleasing both God and Mammon is just not possible. In other words, negotiations always have to end in compromises of some kind or the other, as recalcitrance cannot be ruled out. When wage revision demand comes into light with unexpected hikes, the matter becomes a bit knotted. The impasse affects both parties - and in both cases, money is involved; either as salary or as revenue. In the course of recent disputes between the company management and the workers, it has been noticed that the number of demands in the list is getting longer and longer with some of them seemingly unreasonable. The metal industry in particular has been at the receiving end of a severe labour crisis. It has recorded a remarkable performance in the recent past. Especially during the last 2 1/2 years, there has been a consistent growth in all metals-consuming sectors in the country. If one takes a look at the spurt in performance, the workers' demand for a higher salary seems to be justified.
