The bilge produced in engine room contains oily matter and surfactant, and the oily matter needs to be treated to a concentration of 1 5 ppm or less before being discharged overboard. The oil in the bilge is, however, emulsified by the surfactant, and is difficult to treat by means of an ordinary bilge separator. In order to separate and remove emulsified oil from the bilge, an oily matter treating system using the ability of microorganisms has been developed and mounted onboard a trailer carrier vessel built at our shipyard. The intended performance has been obtained, as reported below. The general flow of the treatment system is shown in Fig. 1. When the bilge waste water is sent from the bilge tank into the biological reactor, a nutritious source is also supplied simultaneously into the reactor from the nutritious source tank. This nutritious source functions to promote in the future. (4) The control device is made by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. All controls of pump operation, water feeding volume, and valve opening and closing timing are automated, so that the system can be handled even by an inexperienced operator. An operation recorder and - fault-cause analysis function are also provided for the convenience of maintenance personnel.
