Girl Scouts from Elko, Spring Creek and Eureka NV gathered at the local Girl Scout House to participate in a series of workshops presented by the Women in Mining (WIM) Education Foundation. According to foundation president Arloa Wool-ford, the workshops are designed to educate young people about the importance of the minerals industry in our daily lives. The activities included cookie mining, "rocks on your face" and how to make your own toothpaste. During the cookie-mining workshop, scouts were allotted 19 dollars to buy a mine and mining supplies. Chocolate-chip cookies were used to represent the mines and the chocolate chips represented the gold deposits. Participants were charged 1 dollar per minute while mining and received 2 dollars for each piece of "gold" they were able to extract from their mine.
