The National GEM Committee: We reach to teach…about Minerals!

SME's local sections have done an outstanding job establishing active and effective local GEM Committees over the past four years. Thirty-eight local GEM Committees are presenting the nast, present and future of mining to teachers, school children and the general public. Many excellent ideas initiated by local sections have been expanded to a national scale. The hugely successful minerals education exhibit at National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) conferences is an example. This pro-gram, initiated by the North Carolina section. has spread across the country and is now coordinated at the national level. The energy and vitality of the SME membership at the local level are inspiring. They offer a unique opportunity for GEM to establish itself as a leader in public education. In the past, efforts by SME staff have been the prime motivator in developing GEM programs. Now we must build on that foundation and continue to lead the public education process on a national level.
