Community development in the urban area of a developing country- a case study of the Antam-pongkor gold mine, Java Island, Indonesia

The proper management of issues related to the community near a mining area is a necessity. Proper management is required for the company to operate without the pressures of community grievances. According to social scholars, a company whose business existence remains sustainable is determined partly by its ability to integrate with its environment. PT Aneka Tambang Tbk, known as Antam, with nickel and gold as its core business, has seven business units in Indonesia with total mining concessions of approximately 363,846 hm~2 (900,000 acres) (PT Antam Tbk, 2003a). As a state-owned business entity, with 35 percent of its stock listed in Jakarta and Australia, the company has a moral responsibility to the welfare of the communities around its mining areas. The company's mission statement notes that it has a responsibility to "participate in efforts to improve the social welfare of communities in the vicinity of the mining areas."
