COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT IN THE URBAN AREA OF DEVELOPING COUNTRY CASE STUDY OF ANTAM-PONGKOR GOLD MINE, JAVA ISLAND, INDONESIA

As a part of mine operation's success key, CommunityDevelopment nowadays seems to be a rule of thumb. Not only is fora short term need of the company during their operation but also forthe national public opinion on the presence of the mining industry toa certain region. Nanggung region which is only a 2-hour drive fromJakarta, brings the challenges to Antam's gold mine business in theareas such as illegal miner presence, easy access to the mine areaas it is very close to the community, and national political sensitivityconsidering its proximity to Jakarta. The company allocates about 3%of its total operational cost annually for Community Development program.The program is derived through SWOT analysis and broadinvolvement of all community components to assure that the allocatedfund is addressed to the right place. In the year of 2002, the companyhas successfully established a conducive-relation with the community.
