The Murray Basin: an Emerging Major Titanium Minerals Province

The mineral sand potential of the Murray Basin is immense, with numerous coarse-grained, beach placer deposits providing the current development impetus. In addition, vast resources of extensive finer-grained deposits provide the possibility of long-term development. For background information, see Minfo 71, p.18 and Minfo 70, p. 28.These deposits occur within the confines of the former 'Murravian Gulf', which was a marine embayment in southern Australia larger in size than the Gulf of Carpentaria. This 320,000 km~2 epicontinental sea was open to the Southern Ocean during the Pliocene era across a 500 km wide mouth stretching from just south of Adelaide to west of Melbourne.
