There is a substantial return on investment waiting for Ontario manufacturers who decide to invest in apprenticeship training, says a recent study from the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC). "The OCC has identified a 430 percent return on investment of apprenticeship training. That is, for every one dollar investment in training a manufacturing apprentice, there is a 4.30 dollars return on that investment," the study notes. The recommendations of the report entitled, Taking Action on Skilled Trades: Establishing the Business Case for Investing in Apprenticeship, were derived from the findings of a recent Skilled Trades Workshop conducted by the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. Nearly 100 delegates from government, business, and education attended the workshop held late last year at the Stoney Creek campus of Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology. The workshop was held to identify solutions to overcome barriers to training and ways to enhance the image of skilled trades.
