Stahlwerk Thüringen to modernise structural mill

Stahlwerk Thüringen GmbH, Unter-wellenborn/Saalfeld, an Arbed Group company, issued an order in February 2001 to SMS Demag AG~1), Germany, for the modernisation of the structural mill that had been supplied by SMS Demag at the beginning of the 1980s. The mill stand group, the straightener and the sawing plant are being revamped to improve the product quality, extend the rolling program and increase production. The order value is approx. Euro 25 million and comprises the supply of the mechanical and electrical equipment, the automation system and the installation, including foundation work. The consortium member for the electrical equipment is Alstom Power Conversion~2), Charleroi/Belgium. The modernisation work is to take place during a plant shutdown in the summer of 2002.The mill stands of the tandem mill group are being replaced by the more powerful compact cartridge stands. The use of these stands enables the rolling program to be extended to beams with web heights of up to 550 mm and flange widths of up to a maximum of 260mm.
