Historical Elements Preserved As Old Building Gets New Life

A former cement plant in San Antonio, TX, was renovated to become what is now a major open-air retail center. One of the keys to giving the project a new life without ignoring its past was to use metal construction products for its design.The Alamo Quarry Market reuses a couple of elements from the Alamo Cement Plant that preceded it. One - a series of tall smoke stacks - gives the new market increased visibility and landmark status. The other is the framing of the original plant. As part of the refurbishment, the plant was stripped to the framing before new claddings - including a new metal roof- were added.
