Back on the road to Gamoep, conditions appeared to be drier than ever. Throughout the whole of the northwestern Cape and, as we were to discover later, across the border into SWA too, the country was pathetically dry. Without definite information to follow, we decided to continue to the Hester Malan Wildflower Reserve near Springbok, where we spent a very pleasant evening with Mr and Mrs Dumoulin. Two years previously, at the same time of year, we had seen Springbok and the surrounding areas coveredwith Namaqualand flowers. What a glorious sight - miles and miles of colour and the hills around Springbok which normally appear to be large slabs of bare rock, ablaze with various shades of yellow and gold! This time, however, it was a monotonous brown, with not a flower to be seen anywhere.
