ON THE NAMING OF LITHOPS HERMETICA

In the MSG Bulletin 20 (3) 2005, p63, column 2, Steven Hammer comments, inter alia, that'... I'd hardly have given Prof. Cole the material which he later dubbed Lithops hermetica...'. I would never have had the wit to think up such an appropriate specific name as this one, L.hermetica, which was proposed by Steven Hammer in reference to the 'hermetically sealed' Protected Diamond Area, the only area where Lithops and other succulent plants are reasonably safe from predators. It seerns desirable, therefore, to give the history of this name.
