A cast roll has been developed for the continuous casting of metal strip -preferably steel strip 1-12 mm thick. The roll includes a core and a sleeve made of a heat-insulating material. The sleeve is fitted onto the core, and circular cooling channels are located between these two components. The channels are connected to radial lines that deliver and remove coolant and a vessel into which the coolant is discharged. Guide elements direct the coolant flows between the respective radial lines and the channels. The elements are located in the channels themselves and are connected to the core of the roll. Each cooling channel has its own guide element, and several of the adjacent channels are connected to a common element. Each guide element is in the form of a comb, and the width and depth of its individual teeth correspond to the width and depth of the cooling channels. Each guide element is made up of individual plates. The plates alternately form the teeth and the interstices of the comb and are strengthened by a connecting element - preferably a bolt that passes through the separateplates. There is a gap between the sleeves of the rolls and the guide elements. Specifically, there is a gap between the bottom of the cooling channels and the end surface of the guide elements. The sizes of the gaps are chosen in relation to the variable length of the guide elements. The specific size of gap for a given case is chosen so that the average velocity of the coolant in the gap will be equal to its velocity in the other zones of the cooling channels. The teeth of the guide elements expand radially in an arcuate manner toward the bottom of the cooling channels. Alternatively, the teeth may contract in the radial direction - again, preferably in arcuate fashion. Either individual guide elements or groups comprised of several elements located next to one another in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the cast roll are displaced through a certain angle relative to that axis and to one another. All of the elements are installed on one line parallel to the longitudinal axis of the roll. The elements are connected to the core of the roil through plug-and-socket-type joints. The same type of joints also connect the elements to a partition located between the radial coolant-feed line and the radial coolant-discharge line. The main component of each such joint is a groove that runs parallel to the longitudinal axis of the roll. The guide elements are made of a material with a thermal conductivity equal to or less than the thermal conductivity of the material of the roll sleeve. While keeping coolant consumption to a minimum, the invention also provides for uniform heat removal from the sleeve of the roll and allows the sleeve to shift relative to the core due to heating. G.
