A new method has been proposed for making hot-rolled strip. The method includes rolling slabs in a continuous train to the speed at which the strip is to be fed into coilers. The stands of the train are then accelerated after the strip has been fed. In the initial stands, the front end of the slab is rolled at speeds which are at least 1.1 times higher than the feed speed. After the front end passes through these stands, the speeds of the latter are lowered to the feed speed. The invention speeds up the rolling operation when the stands of the continuous train are filled with metal. It also improves temperature uniformity and mechanical properties along the strip. E. P. A method has been proposed for making thin plates of stainless steel by directly solidifying molten steel in strip form with a thickness less than or equal to 8 mm. The steel is cast in a movable caster with two cooled walls. The strip then undergoes hot rolling. The solidification of the plate metal is largely complete after the strip leaves the walls. The hot rolling is done on a mill installed immediately after the caster. The mill has work rolls 400-900 mm in diameter. The finishing temperature of the strip is 800-1100 deg C, and its thickness is reduced 15-50 percent by the rolling operation. The cooled walls of the mold consist of the surfaces of two rolls rotating around horizontal axes. The invention ensures permanent closure of the central cavities in the metal and welding of the opposing walls of the cavities by the rolling operation, provided that it is performed under certain conditions.
