This contribution questions the orientation of the psychoanalytic process towards a fortunate encounter (kairos) or an intimate togetherness as telos of the analytical process. The entanglement of this form of object relation with a certain concept of temporality is shown and critically discussed using alternative psychoanalytical conceptualizations of temporality. The idea of a fundamental heterochrony of the human subject is developed along the lines of the theses of Green, Lacan and Laplanche, as well as the considerations of Derrida and Levinas and is opposed to the concept of a fortunate encounter in a shared synchrony. The polychronic structure of the shattered time (Green) undermines every attempt of synchronization between subject and object. The analysis of case material tries to connect these considerations with the practical analytical work. First, a connection is established between the idea of a synchronized, fortunate encounter and a certain form of understanding in analysis. Then, the missed encounter (tyche), misunderstanding and asynchronicity are put forward as essential characteristics of the psychoanalytical process.
