The announcement in December by the Prime Minister that the government is launching a major push on maths, science and technology education is to be welcomed not least because it reiterates the importance of maths education to the economy. In addition to retraining 15, 000 current teachers, this includes the aim to recruit up to 500 specialist maths and physics teachers every year in the next Parliament 'over and above current levels'. How feasible is this aim?
