Unintended consequences of health information technology

Nurses recognize that despite the known benefits of health information technology, the implementation and use of the electronic health record (EHR) (used interchangeably with electronic medical record), computerized provider order entry, and other technologies can lead to unanticipated and unde-sired effects known as unintended consequences. Unintended consequences can increase nursing documentation time; create frustration, barriers, and workarounds to implementation; lead to errors; and in some cases result in patient harm. But, nurses can act to anticipate, avoid, identify, and manage these effects.
