The town of our future could become a moveable feast, where it would be possible to pick up our home and transport it to a new location whenever the need arises. This was the decidedly novel idea put forward by Fritz Gampe of the European Space Agency (ESA), when discussing his latest designs for self-sustainable living last month. The 'space houses' use technology designed for travel beyond the stars to overcome the extreme conditions found in one of the world's most inhospitable environments. The ESA-designed pods could become the basis for Neumayer-III, the latest German Antarctic space station, which is set to replace Neumayer-II in 2008 and was recently allocated research funds of 26 million euros.
