摘要

The food supply chain has become a hot-button issue in recent years. Animal health concerns, food-borne illnesses and increased imports have combined to make the transport of edible goods much more complicated than simply passing the potatoes. It is now necessary to not only know where a product came from, but when it arrived, who produced it and how it got there, as well. To combat this issue head-on, a coalition of Canadian food industry leaders formed Can-Trace, an initiative dedicated to monitoring the motion of food. Under a steering committee comprised of trade associations, GS1 Canada and provincial and federal governments, it developed a voluntary traceability standard known as the Can-Trace Food Traceability Data Standard (CFTDS). Nearly two years later, it is polishing version 2.0.
