In recent years, the main driver for powertrain innovations was primarily the reduction of fuel consumption and the associated more stringent CO_2 emission requirements. Depending on different vehicle market segments and engine categories, fuel consumption and CO_2 emission targets varies. In addition to engine improvements, various electrification and alternative transmission concepts are discussed thoroughly. Meanwhile, mass production solutions have successfully entered into the market. This paper provides an overview of the state-of-the-art technologies in the engine, transmission and electrification fields and helps to establish the synergy among them. Through simulation-based evaluations, potential paths to achieve the target fuel consumption and driveability performance are defined. A portfolio analysis in terms of fuel consumption and driveability is applied to evaluate the alternatives. On this basis, a cost-benefit comparison of the technologies to achieve CO_2 emission targets has been performed. As boundary conditions for this study the desired customer driveability performance and the market and vehicle segment dependent characteristics of driving cycles are considered.
