Future drive systems of modern passenger vehicles are extensively discussed in society these days. Information concerning the limited resources of fossil fuels, climate change, the emission of fine dust or the pollutant load in large cities are everyday news in the daily newspapers. We have weathered the worldwide financial crisis, with an end that is still not foreseeable. Financial power of the customers has declined respectively, but also the fact that more and more people live in an area of high population density in large cities, changes the buying behavior. Renewable energy generation is supported in many countries worldwide and is promoted. The automotive industry is prompted, jointly with politicians and other leading business enterprises to develop a vision, to conserve the resources and environment without losing sight of the customer requirements. The paper will, based on the current status, deal with the capability of various new drive systems with increasing electrification. At the same time power supply and customer value will be considered. In doing so, it becomes clear that not only one solution is possible with regard to the customer requirements. Finally the question shall be answered if the combustion engine will still have a right to exist in 2020 and beyond.
