摘要

European legislation on field trials, release and registration of transgenic crops and food labelling is briefly described. It is concluded that the EU has comprehensive legislation, which focuses on protection of human health and environment. However, the time and financial and legal requirements can delay development of new varieties, which might have long term consequences on the competitiveness of European breeders.
