To create toolpaths, CAM systems need: component geometry - either imported or created within the CAM system; relevant machining cycles; cutting tool definitions (third-party cutting tool databases maybe imported); materials cutting technology information; visual toolpath prove out; and a customisable post processor function. Overlaying this they also have a user interface that offers easy and often tailorable access to all functions, while most systems also now feature a Windows Explorer-type organisational element that allows individual operations and their related elements to be explored/edited. The ability to capture preferred machining strategies, as templates, is another common feature.
