Systems and methods for the computer-aided development of manufacturable and durable cast components

A method and system for optimizing a simulated casting from a light alloy component. The simulation includes that component design data is routed through various computation modules that relate to casting design, process modeling and optimization, material microstructure and defects, and product behavior. Variations in microstructure and defects across different scales with very small sizes are being extended to increasingly larger scales to allow structural behavior calculations of the cast component to take such inconsistencies into account. At least some of the modules use an expert system approach to achieve the optimized results. The results can be compared to the needs of the end user to determine whether a redesign of the workpiece geometry or the manufacturing process is necessary.
