The effects of salinity (0, 50 or 100 mM) and temperature (22 or 32degC) on the growth of pepper (cultivars Yolo Wonder, HDA 103, HDA 174 and SC 81) in hydroponics were investigated. Temperature did not affect dry matter accumulation. Within cultivars, growth decreased with increasing salinity. Yolo Wonder and HDA 103 exhibited the best growth, particularly in the presence of NaCl at 0 or 50 mM. Generally the K, Ca and Mg contents of plant organs decreased and the Na content increased as salinity increased. Best growth was observed when no Na was present in organs, and lowest growth occurred when Na contents of the lamina were in the range 0.5-4% (DW basis), depending on cultivar. HDA 103 and HDA 174 accumulated more Na than the other cultivars.
