A fluorescence measuringtechnique which shows the stress caused to intact fruits during storage has proved its worth in several years of experimen- tal research conducted at the Laimburg experimental centre aiming at preventing the usual browning of the skin with ,Granny Smith' and optimizing the storage ability of other varieties of apple such as ,Golden Delicious'. Just in the third year of experimental research (2003/04), the knowledge amassed at the Laimburg experimental centre on dynamic CA (DCA) using fluorescence measuring techniques (HarvestWatchTM, Satlantic Inc., Canada) was successfully put into practice. In a fruit cooperative located in the Bolzano region, about 500 large boxes of ,Granny Smith' (23 different batches) were stored in a room with a capacity of about 150 deg t using this technique.
