With 60 sites across Argyll, the west coast of Scotland and the Outer Hebrides, employing around 450 staff, the Scottish Salmon Company is the largest salmon producer operating solely in Scotland. It takes great pride in its farming practices in someof Scotland's most striking natural landscapes, and holds environmental stewardship at the core of its company ethos.The company strives to develop innovative farming practices in line with sustainable business development, and with this in mind it has been working on a new venture over the past three years. With support from the Scottish Association of Marine Science(SAMS), it is trying to develop a coordinated approach to sustainable best practice aquaculture through its pilot integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) project.The IMTA site is adjacent to one of the company's salmon farms at Ardcastle in Loch Fyne and is the largest trial of its kind in Europe.Various species of sea life, including seaweeds, queen scallops, sea urchins, oysters and mussels, are being grown alongside salmon to help gain an understanding of how these species interact in creating a naturally balanced ecosystem.
