FDA bill requires registry of adulterated foods, more recall info

A bill requiring FDA to create a new online database of recalled products and implement other food safety measures passed the House and Senate late last week. Ostensibly designed to reauthorize prescription drug user fee programs, the FDA Amendments Act of 2007 (HR 3580) - a compromise bill crafted with input from the Senate after an earlier version (HR 2900) passed the House a few months ago - also contains several provisions relating to food safety. Although some of the provisions are rather broad, including a call for FDA to work more closely with state officials to improve the safety of produce, the act does mandate several concrete changes to agency procedures, including the creation of a "Reportable Food Registry," patterned after the mandatory adverse event reporting system recently created for nonprescription drugs and dietary supplements.
