Inspectors, labs, consumer groups appeal for food safety measures

An alliance of seven groups representing state inspectors, laboratories, hospitals, consumers and others issued a letter to four key members of Congress last week suggesting three measures be included in any food safety-related bills they approve in coming weeks:The letter is signed by the American Public Health Association, Association of Public Health Laboratories, Association of State and Territorial Health Officers, Center for Biosecurity, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, National Association of County and City Health Officials and the Trust for America's Health. It is addressed to Sens. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.), chairman, and Michael Enzi (R-Wy.), ranking minority member, of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. It was also sent to Reps. Henry Waxman (D-Calif), chairman, and Joe Barton (R-Texas), ranking minority member, of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
