The beneficial effects of inorganic nanomaterials have been widely discussed in articles relating to industrial liquid coatings but the use of these materials in powder coatings has attracted little attention until the publication of an article by researchers at two Science and Technology Centres in Brazil. Their work describes a comparison of the effect of small additions of a conventional micron sized filler and corresponding amounts of a nano-sized montmorillonite (MMT) clay filler in an epoxy-based amine cured powder coating, upon the mechanical properties, thermal stability and barrier properties of the cured films.
