Upward frozen groundfish price trend

Frozen groundfish markets during 2004 were characterized by relatively strong supplies in several key product segments. Alaska pollock fillet exports from the USA were up on 2003 as were hake volumes from Argentina. European fillet markets benefited from this supply situation and, with a weak dollar for much of the year, euro prices for frozen groundfish products remained largely on a par, or even below, 2003 levels. In dollar terms, the start of an upward price trend for Alaska pollock fillet becameevident during 2004 following weak Russian landings during the first half of the year. Helped by stronger Asian demand and a stronger dollar, the upward price trend strengthened during the first half of 2005 and appears to be extending to other groundfish segments going into the second half of the year.
