A non-recommended wheat variety has found a niche in the south west, as Andrew Blake explains. Not all wheat varieties that fail to be evaluated for the Recommended List should necessarily be discarded, urges a West Country seeds merchant. According to Ken Tuffin of Pearce Seeds, Dorset, KWS's Sherborne is a prime example of a variety with features maldng it particularly suitable for the region - even though it never reached RL trials. "So much of the seed trade is biased towards the needs of the east," says Mr Tuffin. "But down here we're not really bothered by yellow rust, for example. In my 30 years here we've only ever seen it a couple of times - in Brigadier and Slejpner."
