Some reflections on a simple geometric problem

As part of my oral examination in Analytic Geometry, some 55 years ago at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, I was asked to show that for any two skew lines L = AB and M = CD in 3-space, there exist a unique pair of parallel planes π and σ, such that the line L is in the plane π and the line M is in the plane σ.
