A year before he died at 95 in 2003, Alastair Cooke, one of the finest journalists the UK has ever spawned, wrote a piece about the monstrous corporate failure of Enron. He opened saying that he'd sworn to himself that he was going to say nothing until the dust had settled but some of the shenanigans of CEO Kenneth Lay and cronies proved too much for even Cooke's resolve. It became 'irresistible', he wrote, 'but I, for one, shall resist any long, chop-licking recital -even though the press has pounced on it like a cage of mice let loose in a cheese store'.
