On a lot just 60-feet deep and 70-feet wide, with homes built 10-feet apart, the challenge of a small site presented a unique opportunity to develop a courtyard garden for this new home in Athens, Georgia. In this mixed-use, planned development, frontdoors and porches face tree-lined sidewalks with garage access from rear alleys. Lucky is the landscape architect that is asked to consult early in a project to develop a concept for outdoor living and to design a garden for an avid gardener. A floor plan revision added a side door to the dining room and the decision was made to build a detached garage with a breezeway. With only a 20x3 0-foot landscape area left to develop as a garden, the changes provided both visual and physical access to the area from the front, side, garage and alley. Additionally, the leftover space became enclosed on the sides by the house and garage.
