Faure the American Way

I was one of the lucky people who took the Faure workshop with Mauricette Pinoteau at the Enamel Conference in Columbus, Ohio. Naturally, I wanted to repeat what I had learned as soon as I got home! Well, that was simply not possible...or was it? The French technique requires 40 mesh enamels as well as several other products that take time to produce or have to be found. I began to think about it and realized that Faure was also firing his enamels in a charcoal heated kiln. Things have changed and time moves on. My kiln is electric and has a pyrometer. There are other products on the market that were not available to Faure, so why not try doing his method with 2007 technology? Tom Ellis has completely described the technique for you in detail (Glass on Metal, Vol. 26, No. 5, December 2007). I followed the technique just as Mauricette had shown us, but simply substituted easily available products. I tried to remain true to the original technique, but simply avoided the cumbersome parts substituting currently available materials, all found in Thompson's catalog.
