When it comes to color combinations, there is one colloquialism that has traveled in my circles for at least 25 years and that is, "Orange and pink make you stink." I have no idea where it originated. Please do not look it up. Obviously you aren't going to stink, but the message has been loud and clear, do not combine orange and pink. Does this warning still hold merit? The answer is an unequivocal no. To create today's dazzling wild color combinations, more than likely you will find yourself letting orange get all snuggly with pink. Guess what? It is already happening naturally with some of your favorite plants, so whynot expand on it? Take a look at Bandana Cherry Sunrise lantana (Lantana camara 'Bante Cheriasun') or the award-winning Sonset (L. camara 'Sonset'). Sonset starts off yellow, which is followed by orange changing to red, then magenta, pink and purple. These are just two examples of many lantana that are like kaleidoscopes of ever-changing colors - not going by any rules or regulations from a color wheel. In fact, we gardeners absolutely treasure such beautiful displays.
