Running out the back door to the garden to gather vegetables and herbs for a fresh salad or soup and flowers for the dinner table evokes pleasure, peace of mind and saves on the grocery bill too. Growing small fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers alltogether in the same garden is not a new idea. The English call it a kitchen garden and have been growing their own food for years in small areas or plots. The French produce similar results in a Potager (pronounced poat-ah-zhay). Potage is the French term for soup of vegetables and broth. Basically a potager is a year-round vegetable and herb garden to supply the kitchen with fresh bounty on a daily basis.
