The suspension system used on a bus must be built with the drivers, passengers and the safety of other vehicles and pedestrians in mind. "The benefits are to the end users," says Dean Greb, bus and coach sales manager for ArvinMeritor in North America. "The right suspension for a bus gives greater driver satisfaction, a better turning radius, a better ride and steering." There are also long range effects to the types of suspension systems used. "An air ride will improve performance and handling but also increase the longevity of the axles, brakes and body of the bus," says Roger Elkins, product manager for truck, bus and motor homes for the Holland Group. "The electrical systems and air conditioning will also last longer because of the decreased chassis vibrations." Selecting the right kind of suspension system for a bus or motorcoach model is done by the manufacturer. The use and characteristics of the model will play a major role in the system that is used and its performance.
