Cytomegalovirus (CMV) reactivation induces life-threatening diseases in a variety of immunocompromised patients.1 After the initial infection, the virus resides in a latent state in macrophage-granulocyte progenitors in the bone marrow and in peripheral monocytes.2 However, the induction site and the triggering process for the CMV reactivation remains unknown.
