The term bezoar refers to an accumulated collection of indigestible material forming a mass in the GI tract. The first published description of bezoars was by Baudamant in 1779. Trichobezoars are composed of hair and are more common in female pediatric patients with psychiatric disorders. They may cause abdominal pain and obstaictive symptoms. Trichobezoars may attain large sizes before becoming symptomatic, which render their endoscopic removal difficult. They may become embedded in the gastric mucosa causing ulcerations and GI hemorrhage. Rapunzel syndrome refers to trichobezoar originating in the stomach with a tail extending into the small bowel, causing obstruction.
