Candida infection presenting as multiple ulcerated masses.

Candida infection of the GI tract in normal or immuno-compromised patients invariably involves the esophagus, with the classic finding of mucosal plaques.1'2 Rarely, esoph-ageal candidiasis can cause ulcers, although the majority of ulceration associated with Candida is attributed to viral co-infection.1 Candida involving the stomach or the small bowel is uncommon, with only a few reports; both plaques and ulceration are described in this form of the infection.3"7 It is unclear from the limited descriptions of extraesopha-geal Candida whether or not there is a greater tendency for ulceration compared with esophageal infection. In this report, we describe a patient with disseminated esophageal and extraesophageal Candida that presented as diffuse ulcerated masses initially suspected to be malignant.
