Surgical training is a multifaceted process. A training programme aims to produce not only a good clinician and technician, but also a good communicator, scholar, health advocate and a professional. While clinical and operative skills are essential, it has been increasingly realised that an insight into the process of research, resulting in the development of critical appraisal skills, evidence-based decision making, continuing medical education and the ability to contribute to the knowledge base, is also a necessary component. Most surgical training programmes encourage a period of research activity as part of surgical training. For many this is an exciting introduction to academic surgery, for others it is yet another hurdle to cross in pursuing their surgical career. A small proportion of trainees, having obtained a higher degree by thesis, pursue an academic appointment.
