The link between telomere maintenance and telomerase activation has long been studied in cancer cells, but the process by which telomerase becomes activated has remained elusive. A mechanism by which some tumour cells maintain telomerase expression was uncovered by analysis of the promoter region of the telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) gene.
