A summary of the Second International Conference on Borated Glasses, Crystals and Melts

The Second International Conference on Borate Glasses, Crystals and Melts was held 22-25 July 1996 at The Cosener's House (the conference centre of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Abingdon, England. The meeting was held in honour of Professor Philip J.Bray's notable contributions to the field, specifically in the area of magnetic resonance. The conference was divided into thirteen sessions spanning the range of topics from structure to spectroscopy to thermodynamics to industrial and technological applications. In all there were 66 presentations on borates given at the meeting. Several of the most discussed topics will be revisited in this review. For example there was considerable controversy over the presence of boroxol rings in glassy boron oxide. Evidence from various perspectives will be given. Great advances in spectroscopic investigations of borates were presented at the conference and will be summarised here. Among the techniques reported were NMR, NQR, FT-EPR, vibrational methods, neutron scattering. x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, acoustic methods and Brillouin light scattering.
