Exploiting oil and natural gas resources in an offshore environment requires the use of huge pieces of equipment which are extremely expensive in both investment and in running costs. In order to keep these drilling rigs and ancillary equipment in good condition and to keep operations running efficiently, a whole array of moving surfaces need lubrication. Without proper lubrication, the equipment would break down in a very short period of time through different tribo-mechanisms such as wear, seizure under conditions of extremely high loads and, last but not least in such marine environments, rust and corrosion.
