This paper describes a successful development project which has resulted in an excellent thread compound, where the selection of suitable substances has been carried out with full respect to the sensitive environment. This newly developed pipe dope has been tested in all different conditions from simple laboratory tests through practical test rigs and into fully fledged field trials. In every case, the product has been shown to perform just as well as, if not better than, the standard thread compounds containing petroleum products and heavy metals. All eco-toxicological tests on marine organisms, in accordance to the Harmonised Offshore Chemical Notification Format (HOCNF), have been performed. This product has been used with excellent results in various different applications such as jacking, casing, tubing and drilling, allowing a reduction of inventory stocks on, for example, offshore platforms.
