Effect of herbicides on chlorophyll, sugars and quality parameters of durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) cultivars.

A field study was conducted in Ludhiana, Punjab, India during the rabi season of 2004-05 to evaluate the effects of herbicides on chlorophyll and sugar contents, and quality parameters (protein content, Parling index, hectolitre weight, semolina recovery and beta -carotene content) of durum wheat cultivars PDW233 and PDW274. The treatments included application of the following herbicides at 35 and 45 days after sowing: isoproturon at 940 g/ha, clodinafop at 60 and 70 g/ha, and sulfosulfuron at 25 and 31.25 g/ha. The values for the quality parameters were well within the prescribed range. Chlorophyll and total sugar contents decreased when sampling was delayed from 10 to 30 days after herbicide spray..
