An annotated checklist of Thysanoptera (thrips) from the Nordic countries

The insect order Thysanoptera are small insects with sucking mouthparts. The Swedish species have usually a size of 1 to 3 mm. Some are up to 5 mm (Ahlberg 1926). The order belongs to subdivision Paraneoptera, along with the orders Hemiptera, Phthiraptera and Psocoptera (Gullan & Cranston 2005). Almost 6000 species are known worldwide, in two suborders, Terebrantia and Tubulifera (Mound 2013), which consists of three families (Aeolothripidae, Melanthripidae and Thripidae) and one family (Phlaeothripidae) respectively (Mound 2013).
